A River Runs Through It
Caravan & Outdoor Life Magazine
The Silwerstrand Caravan Park, a privately-owned resort in Robertson, is one of those places that have caravanners and campers returning time and time again. The turn-off to the caravan park is on your right just before you enter the lovely Western Cape town of Robertson, if you are driving from the Cape Town side. The resort is owned and managed by Antonette Kotze, who also runs the renowned Montagu Caravan Park just up the R62.
One of the reasons that Silverstrand Caravan Park is so popular is the fact that the park is situated right on the banks of the Breede River. This makes it an idyllic camping spot for anyone into water activities. Whether you want to throw a line and try to catch some fish, or want to get out on the water in the canoe, Silwerstrand is the place for you. Many campers even have speed boats that allow for skiing.

Visitors get to camp on well-grassed sites close to the river, and have stunning views of the Langeberg Mountain Range in the distance.
The Breede River is broad, and offers lekker riverside picnic fun especially in the summer months. It’s everything a camper could dream of – green grass, a river view, set against a mountain backdrop… and the scene is perfectly rounded off by the abundance of braai facilities available all over the camp!
Plus, you don’t need to leave your “best friend” behind, as Silwerstrand is pet-friendly.
All the stands are electrified, and taps with drinkable water are shared between sites. There is a host of facilities that will ensure that your stay is enjoyable, including ample ablutions, laundry facilities (washing machine and tumble drier), a scullery, and portable-loo flushing.
The resort’s manager, Nicolene van As, is a warm welcoming person, and she keeps this caravan park running like a Swiss chronograph.
If you’re not the sit-at-the-camp-allday type, you’re also in for a treat, since Silwerstrand is situated in what is known as “The Valley of Wine and Roses”. The area is famous for its vineyards and wineries that produce some of the best vino in the country. For the grappa lovers, the Tanagra Private Cellar is just 15km south from Robertson. You will also find a couple of top olive farms in the valley.
Of course, just a few minutes’ drive from Silwerstrand is the historical town of Robertson, where you will find good restaurants, shops, art galleries and antique shops. This town and its surrounds could keep you entertained for a week.
The Robertson Museum market is held on the first Saturday of each month except January.
There are three walks around town, which pass interesting building styles – like that of the Victorian villa built during the Ostrich-feather boom, and other historic buildings.
